I bought this kit for my 7-year old nephew who likes science and root beer. He was SOOO excited, and we had a lot of fun doing it together. Like other reviewers, our first batch came out too flat, but tasted good. We’re going to try another batch and see if we can get more carbonation. He is already planning his “root beer stand” to sell frothy mugs to the neighbors. Highly recommended! (Update 12/09: our second batch was perfect–much fizzier. We left the bottles somewhere less chilly to ferment for 3 days, and then transferred them to the fridge when they were firm to the touch.)

Costs about a $1/glass. In these recessionary times, one can save alot of $. In a bar, you pay $3-4/glass, $1 for some music, and have to tip the bartender???!!!

I love beer. When I started brewing by myself with Mr. Beer I was afraid my beer would not taste good. Well, my beer tastes very good and this dark beer is one of my favorites. I certainly recommend it!

I waited for my Mr. Beer St. Patrick’s Irish Stout to fully condition and tried it before writing a review on this Refill Brew Pack. First of all, if you brewed this refill pack “as is” using the Irish Stout hopped malt extract and the Booster (dextrose), and you will get a pretty good, albeit light beer with an estimated 3.7% ABV. However, if you added the Creamy Brown unhopped malt extract (available at mrbeer.com), you’ll get a much more flavorful and delicious beer. For this batch, I included the Irish Stout HME, Creamy Brown UME, Booster, and a cup of honey to boost up the alcohol by volume to 6.9%. I let the beer ferment for three weeks at room temperature and carbonate in the bottles for 5 weeks. The beer had the color of black coffee, had nice carbonation, and tasted great! The refill pack sold here can be used as a base for many recipes available on Mr. Beer’s website. Happy brewing!

This made a very, very good beer. It even got rave reviews from friends I shared it with–not that I wanted to share much of it once I got a taste! *heh* A little less “stout” than some stouts I’ve had, but still really robust and full of flavor.
